What are Leaves?
There are two types of leaves of absence: mandated and discretionary.
Mandated leaves are governed by a myriad of often times overlapping state
and federal laws. These include leaves based on disability such as the
Family Medical Leave Act, the California Pregnancy Disability Leave Act,
the California Family Rights Act, and Workers’ Compensation. Leaves
based on a condition other than disability include protection for domestic
abuse victims, court testimony, jury duty, school conference attendance,
armed forces service, and volunteer firefighters.
How are Leaves administered?
Administration issues include notification requirements, time off periods,
compensation and benefits during absence, governmental and insurance agencies
communication, reinstatement rights, and information tracking.
